The Variety
Navelina Oranges
belong to the family of fruits of the citrus species Citrus Sinensis in the family Rutaceae. The fruit is quite big and of an excellent quality. It is a slightly oval shaped orange with an intense orange colour. It has a high juice content and is sweet. They are primarily grown for human consumption. The village, is in the municipality of Agrinio, Aetoloacarnania. It is located at an altitude of 30 meters on the west side of the valley of Agrinio, near the banks of the Achelous River, 10 km west of the city of Agrinio and at a distance of 35 km. from Messolonghi. The municipal district of Kalivia has a total area of 33,651 acres of lowland.The Region
Mountains dominate the north, northeast, west and southeast, especially the Acarnanian Mountains. The longest and main river is the Acheloos, which ends as a delta in wetlands to the southwest on a rich fertile valley. Achelous is the 2nd longest river in Greece & the river with the most water. It stems from the Pindos mountains and after a 220 km route, it flows into the Ionian sea. Citrus sinensis ‘Navelina’:
This variety of orange was given the name ‘Navel’ because of the way in which it grows – is has a second fruit that grows at the apex and makes the orange a not quite round shape – looking like a human navel! Navelina is very closely related!
